Inner Child Healing and Trauma Counselling.

You may have heard the term inner child healing and wondered what it really means, or how it relates to trauma counselling.
At its core, inner child healing is about understanding the parts of you that were shaped by early experiences, and how they continue to influence how you feel, relate, and respond today.
How the Past Shows Up in the Present
Many of the patterns we struggle with don’t begin in adulthood. Some of these patterns can show up as:
- People-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries
- Fear of rejection or abandonment
- Feeling not “enough”
- Emotional overwhelm or shutdown
These responses are often developed as ways to cope, and may have been helpful for a time (like in childhood), even if they no longer serve you now. Additionally, it is now known that trauma can affect both the mind and body, and this can further explain how our childhood experiences can remain, and show up in our day to day experiences

What is Inner Child Healing?
Inner child healing gently brings awareness to these earlier parts of yourself.
It’s not about reliving the past, but about:
The Role of Trauma Counselling
Trauma counselling supports this process by providing a safe and grounded space to explore your experiences.
This may involve:
- Working with emotional patterns at a manageable pace
- Supporting your nervous system to feel safe
- Helping you make sense of your experiences without overwhelm
When accessing trauma counselling with an holistic counsellor, psychotherapist or hypnotherapist, sometimes a light hypnosis can be used to access inner child healing. This usually involves some guided visualisation where you are safely guided back to revisit childhood memories with the intent of empowering and assisting your child self in painful or traumatic times.
This can be referred to as ‘journey work’, or ‘inner child healing’, or ‘hypnotherapy’, depending on the counsellor and their particular training and expertise.

A Gentle Process of Change
Healing doesn’t happen all at once.
It often unfolds slowly, through small shifts in awareness, self-compassion, and the way you relate to yourself.
Over time, this can lead to, managing or eliminating unhelpful habits and patterns, greater emotional stability, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of self.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
This work can feel vulnerable, but you don’t have to navigate it on your own. Having a supportive space and a skilled therapist can make all the difference.
Before engaging in inner child healing, ensure you feel comfortable and safe with the therapist you are working with. The rapport you have with the therapist ahead of time, will significantly impact the value and results of the inner child healing, or in fact any counselling sessions you have.
The more rapport, trust and safety you have with your therapist, the better the results will be for you as you explore inner child healing, trauma counselling and holistic counselling.
If you feel ready to explore this work, you’re welcome to reach out and begin at a pace that feels right for you.
